About: Princess Alexandra Hospital / Paediatrics

(as a relative),

My 2 week old grand-daughter was admitted to the Princess Alexandra Hospital with breathing difficulty at only two weeks of age.

Living a long way away, this was an anxious time for the extended family, but everyone rallied around to help, and to care for her older sibling.

After a two hour wait in paediatric A&E, they were seen by a senior trainee doctor and admitted to Dolphin ward.

I cannot fault the care that she received there, and she needed a drip and oxygen for about 36 hours.

We know how busy it was in A&E, and we wondered if the GP who sent the child in had contacted the paediatric team to ask for the admission, as the wait could have been avoided.  The wait was potentially dangerous without proper triage.

However, the FY1 doctor immediately recognised that the baby was ill as soon as she became aware of her, and expedited the admission, so well done!

Dear AP,

Thank you for your comment which I have passed on to Children's Emergency Department. We know that we do not always get it right and realise it can be very stressful when you have a very young child so please do not be afraid to ask for additional help if you feel it is needed. Clearly, you will know your grand-daughter best and will notice the difference between how she usually would be and how she is if unwell.

If you do feel there is anything further we could do, please do not hesitate to get in touch, we are only a phone call away on 01279 82 72 11 and we can be contacted Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm.
