"My brother with autism received excellent care"

About: Lincoln County Hospital

My adult brother with autism was recently admitted to Dixon Ward at Lincoln Hospital to undergo a series of examinations under general anaesthetic due to his acute fear of hospitals and high anxiety levels. The care he received was first class from friendly and caring staff who liaised closly with his carers and myself and took on board our suggestions for how we could keep my brother as calm as possible. Staff offered to temporarily close one of the waiting areas to other patients while my brother waited to go to theate and this greatly reduced his anxiety caused by crowds and noise. Once in theatre, staff allowed his carers to support my brother through the administration of the anaesthetic in ways that were best suited to his level of need and throughout the procedure treated him with respect and kindness. As a result, my brother was the calmest that he has ever been when accessing a hospital and the examinations undertaken highlighted a medical problem that he had been unable to communicate to us because of his autism. A massive thank you for the professional , friendly and caring way in which we were all supported during our visit.

Dear Fiona

It is very pleasing to hear that we were able to deliver very specialised care for your brother and made the experience less frightening for him.

We really appreciate the kind words you have expressed and I have shared them with the rest of the team involved and I know they will really happy that you both had a very positive experience.

Regards

June

Hi Fiona

I am so pleased to read that your brother had such a positive experience at Lincoln. I would really like to meet with you and your brother as I would really like to record your patient story so we can share it with all other areas in the Trust to show that with a few alterations in procedures, we can get it so right and make such a difference to patients.

You can contact me directly on 07799 868206 or via email Sharon.kidd@ulh.nhs.uk.

Hopefully speak to you soon

Regards
