"Waiting for my son's care"

About: Lincoln County Hospital / Paediatrics

(as a parent/guardian),

My young son was admitted on Saturday and having been told yesterday that he has a hole in his skull, we're still waiting on an 'emergency' mri scan. All we seem to do is wait. There just seems to be no urgency at all.

There's a possibility he's leaking brain fluid. How long does it take?

I am so sorry that you are having such a worrying time - could you perhaps contact me directly at: jennie.negus@ulh.nhs.uk and give me a little more information so that I can try and get someone to help you?

I have had the opportunity now to try and understand what happened for you and I am very sorry that you felt that there were unacceptable delays in arranging what you believed was an emergency MRI scan for your son.

Your son was assessed constantly by the consultant in charge of his care and was discussed with the specialist paediatric neurology team at Nottingham who felt that the MRI scan did not need to be done immediately. This would only change if your son’s clinical condition changed.

We should have done more to explain this to you and relieve your anxieties and I am very sorry that we didn't. I understand that the consultant in charge of your son’s care spoke to you at length after you had posted this comment, although he was not aware that you had done so. I hope that he was able to address any questions that you had and that you felt better informed following this.

I am also aware that your son has now had an MRI scan and you are awaiting the results of this. I hope that once you have these results, you will have a better idea on what is happening and the plan going forward.

If you still have unanswered questions, then please do not hesitate to tell the nurse in charge of the ward or ask for sister or matron who will arrange for the medical team to speak to you or please email me directly at: jennie.negus@ulh.nhs.uk and I will do all I can to try and help.

Thank you again for leaving your feedback.
