"We will be forever grateful"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / Neonatal Unit

(as a parent/guardian),

Me and my wife had the belated pleasure of bringing home our baby boy, after spending 3 months in the Neonatal Unit in Craigavon.

Our son was born 12 weeks premature after an emergency C-Section, and with that we were all catapulted into the world of neonatal.

It would be impossible for me to express in words just how in awe we are of all the neonatal staff, and how grateful we are to have had them looking after our precious boy.

On the night before our son came home I wrote this poem. I think it best sums up our experience of care in the Neonatal Unit, and as an extension to all the staff of the Maternity Unit that brought our son into the world safely and nursed him until he was ready for home. We will be forever grateful xxx

To our neonatal family

It is time for us to part

I hope you know

Before we go

You will always be in our hearts

It’s been one a hell of a journey

With its share of ups and downs

Yet even through the worst of it

We never saw you frown

It was the glow that comes off all of you

That kept us heading for the light

And even on the darkest days you said

“These babies they fight and fight “

Of course our boy was like

“NICU got this!”

They have seen it all before

They nurse you from when you get here

Until you are “headed for the door !”

Never a truer word spoken

You nurse the parents too

Then picked us up when we both felt down

And literally pulled us through

So off into the world he goes

Imagine what he will go on to do!!

Yet no matter where life takes him we will know

He owes so much to you.

Thank you, Shooting Star, for taking time and effort to put your story in poetry.

After 3 months of " ups and downs" we are delighted you have your precious boy at home, and we hope family life is going well for you all.

Your poem is on our notice board for all to read and to also give hope to many more families who are also walking this journey on a daily basis.

Regards

Una Toland Ward Manager
