"My 2 year old swallowed washing liquid and we had to dial 999"

About: Northern Ireland Ambulance Service / Emergency ambulance response The Ulster Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

About 08:30 in the morning our son came into the living room coughing and gagging.  We quickly discovered that he had bitten into a persil washing capsule and ingested some of the liquid and got some on his skin. We dialled 999 for advice and within 5 minutes there was an ambulance at our house. The two paramedics, Ross & Richard were really phenomenal. They explained everything so clearly to our son and he was happy to do as they asked.

They then phoned ahead and took us to A&E at the Ulster Hospital and we were taken directly into the pediatric area. The staff there were exceptional. Thomas the Dr and Nicole the Emergency Nurse made our son feel so comfortable and their care was second to none. Myself and my husband would like to thank everyone who helped us today and we really appreciate everything that they did. Our son was overjoyed to get a ride in the ambulance with the flashing lights - a dream come true for him but not for us.

Good morning mrsellison2019

I’d firstly like to thank you for sharing your experience associated with NIAS, particularly taking into account that it is associated with your son. I am aware that these situations can present a very much frightening experience with a young child, and panic sets in very much immediately. It gives great encouragement to hear of the swift response made by our clinicians through the first dial, significantly more so as immediate guidance was given before the clinicians arrived. It is furthermore beneficial of the relevant quickness in relation to the time taken for an ambulance to arrive, in stressful and traumatic situations, response time is a crucial factor; making evident that it took only five minutes for an arrival of an ambulance adds to the encouragement of high NIAS standards being met, in a current climate where this can be difficult in achieving. The professional expertise of the clinicians who attended giving ease to both yourself and your son further highlights the level of quality being maintained within NIAS, as so with talking to, and calming a young child as they can become very much agitated.

Your feedback will help to further strengthen and help boost encouragement for the clinicians working on the ground, particularly taking into account the pressured and tiring working environment that thy operate within. I would be very much content in sharing this story to the clinicians who attended the call-out as I feel they would find satisfaction in hearing of how their professionalism helped bring calm and ease to yourself and your son, for this to be done could I ask that send some information related to:
