"GP surgery Glasgow"

About: General practices in Greater Glasgow & Clyde Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Clinical haematology

(as the patient),

I've had all kinds of problems with my GP practice, but the most serious failings I'll tell here. In my experience, if you are neurodiverse (ADHD, Autism etc.) you will be mistreated. My sorry story begins when I came to the realisation I may be autistic. This is a really vulnerable moment for a potentially autistic person that requires compassion and patience. The appointment went to a bad start. I was very nervous so when the GP asked me why I might be autistic, I asked them what they specifically wanted me  to say - I had lots of things. I feel the GP talked at me for 7 minutes of the 10 minute appointment saying that I needed to write down a list of reasons why. I interrupted several times going "um" "ahem" "emm and saying I have reasons, because I already had them in front of me, but they carried on and on saying they had lots of people in lockdown think they're autistic or ADHD, that I should've written down a list of reasons why, that I should go private and they would verify it for me (I believe this is actually false and there are many services which will only accept diagnosis made originally by the NHS, one of them being government benefits.) They then continued by saying the NHS wait list is really long... on and on. They were so dismissive and not giving me a chance to speak, so I barged in 7 minutes after them just talking at me and said that actually I had written down my reasons and was worried that I was going to lose my job if I didn't have a diagnosis. That's when they told me something I found incredibly offensive and wrong - that autistic people don't get jobs. I felt like I'd been slapped. (Spoiler alert! I have a job! I work full time and I'm diagnosed Autistic!) So they just sighed in a dismissive way and said to just write down my reasons and hand them in at the surgery. I burst into tears after the call, totally stricken. It was a miracle that they actually referred me, and I think it was only because I handed in 10 pages of reasons and life experiences and bothered the reception until they told me I'd been referred. No one should have to fight for basic healthcare.

My second experience, I feel, is just unapologetic negligence. My GP (a different one in the practice) referred me for blood tests for B12 deficiency. They told me carefully and clearly in person it was a B12 blood test, and I was wearing my Sunflower lanyard. When I had the bloods done, I asked the nurse if one tube was B12 to make sure. The test was not B12 - the GP had sent me for a Coeliac test. (I have a colleague who has B12 deficiency and she tells me the blood tubes don't even look the same - B12 is yellow lid and coeliac is purple lid, so to my knowledge, there's no way they could be confused, it must've been an error). The nurse told me they can only draw what the GP refers me for, so I phoned my GP straight away to get them to fix the problem. I'm not coeliac, and I'd presented with no symptoms of being coeliac. It was truly bizarre. The receptionist refused to acknowledge there was a problem, despite me explaining the GP had told me earlier that week they were sending me for B12 and I'd been given a Coeliac test instead. The receptionist even said I hadn't been given B12 tablets yet and to collect them, when I had  finished the course and that's why I'd been sent for the bloods in the first place (how did they not know that, the GP can see my record and the date my medication was issued on the screen). So I continued to press on and ask why I had been given a Coeliac test, and I I needed a B12 done. The receptionist became very firm and refused to acknowledge the problem, saying the GP checks very carefully, they wouldn't make a mistake, when it was obvious there was, and I demanded to speak to the practice manager or a GP. The receptionist then talked to me in a slow voice, which with them being able to see I'm autistic on the records on their screen at this point, I have to consider they were discriminating against me. Crying, I told them I was hanging up because I was very upset and melted down in the clinic, which was hugely distressing for me. The nurse who took my bloods was kind enough to phone the GP with me and only when the nurse was helping me on the phone did they sort it out. But they didn't apologise at any point for sending me for the wrong test. That was the last straw for me and I moved to another GP. I would never recommend this surgery to anyone.

Dear Rennmaus

Thank you for sharing your feedback on Care Opinion.

I am very sorry to read about your experiences with your GP and for the upset and distress this has caused you.

The GP's operate independently and they each have their own feedback, comments and complaints systems. As you have raised a number of serious issues, I would encourage you to contact the GP practice manager directly to discuss these.

If that is something you might find difficult to do there is an independent service called PASS (Patient Advice and Support Service) who can help you to give feedback, raise concerns or make a complaint about any health service, including GP practices. It is free and entirely confidential. You can contact PASS on 0800 917 2127 or visit their website at Patient Advice & Support Service | Citizens Advice Scotland (cas.org.uk).

I am pleased that the nurse in the clinic was able to assist you with sorting out the correct test.

Kind Regards

Nicole
