"Everything I dreaded about labour I didn’t want, happened"

About: Aberdeen Maternity Hospital / Obstetrics (Maternity care)

(as the patient),

I went into have my baby last week after having the cook balloon placed. My first midwife I had was fantastic couldn’t fault her at all.

My second midwife for the last part started off fine but as the night went on I felt I was putting her out her way. She was more interested in getting her notes done than anything else.

I had been following hypnobirthing and doula advice throughout my pregnancy and breathing techniques to be then told to push as if I’m constipated, chin to chest and hold my breath without being able to take a breath back in resulting in me spewing (also that seemed to annoy her too) I ended up getting forceps, episiotomy and then opened up again to get my placenta removed in theatre.

Everything I dreaded about labour I didn’t want had happened to me which has made me still in agony and not able to enjoy my newborn when I’m still unfit and mentally has affected me. I personally think midwife’s like her should get her head out a book from the dark ages and into a hypnobirthing one and rethink her methods.

If I had the first midwife for the second part I feel things would’ve went smoother. Even my forceps midwife had to tell the second midwife to get out of the room.

Another staff member was brilliant also. Disappointed in my experience I never want to endure that again.

For a happy time of year I feel truly awful.

Dear Sfergie89

Many congratulations on the birth of your baby and thank you for taking the time to feedback about your experience. I'm am very sorry to hear that your experience during labour was not supportive and you were made to feel that way. This is disappointing to hear and not what we would expect of our care of you.

In the first instance you could make contact with your community midwife to arrange to meet together and go through your electronic records. They could also refer on further if this would be helpful.

Alternatively you can contact gram.womenservices@nhs.scot if you would like to discuss this with the Senior Charge Midwife from Labour ward or Midwifery Manager.

I am delighted that you felt the first midwife and another attending your birth were supportive.

Thank you again and please accept our apologies.

Rachael MacDonald
