I was admitted to Ravenscraig Ward for two weeks. Whilst there, the staff were absolutely wonderful - they took the care to make sure that all patients were treated with dignity and respect and were sensitive enough to be aware of the individual needs of every patient on the ward - and what I mean by that is that we were remembered as individuals and treated as such.
One possible negative (which isn’t the fault of the staff) is that, given the nature of the ward, there were some people there who dominated a significant portion of staff time. Unfortunately this meant that there wasn’t always the time for just having “a blether”. Despite this, staff did manage to find the time to get to know me on a personal level whilst I was there. It made me feel seen.
From my experience, Ravenscraig Ward is a safe environment with staff working hard to look after the well-being of all of their patients. I was worried in my first few days of a high turnover of staff, in that it would be different people each day/night. But it is evident that the rota tries to maintain some consistency. This was highly important to my recovery I feel. Once again I come back to the fact that the nursing staff recognised me as an individual and I felt safe and supported.
Now, for obvious reasons, I hope I never have to go back. But if I did, I would accept an admission to Ravenscraig Ward again. If you or your loved one is requiring acute psychiatric treatment, be assured that it is a good place to receive said treatment.
