My Mum had been receiving Home Care Services. I phoned in November and asked to speak to the manager as I was concerned about a carer's comments and other issues. I had spoken to another two carers about it who also said they had heard that the same carer had been making the same comments in other peoples houses and one old lady had said she didn't want them to be sent out again. The carer in question was feeding my Mum a cup of soup out of a juice bottle. The bottle was very hot and they put it in my Mum's mouth and kept it in there. As mum had been being sick in previous days I suggested that maybe she let my mum take a break in between drinks.
The carer's reply was that my Mum liked it like this. My mum has dementia and wouldn't know what she liked as she was bedridden and couldn't string a sentence together. I voiced my concerns to the other carers who told me I should phone up and complain. My sister-in-law usually deals with the carers but as we do not speak I could not voice my complaint to her. This is why I called to and asked to speak to the Manager.
The manager did not ring me back but rang my sister-in-law who said she did not have any concerns as she didn't know about it. I rang the Manager who said I was not power of attorney. They refused to speak to me even thought it is my Mum.
I asked her not to send out the carer again, but they went against my wishes and still sent them out. They did find my Mum unresponsive and phoned an ambulance. When my Mum went into hospital she had sepsis and had bedsores on her buttocks and on her legs. The stench that came from her hands as she was clasping her fingers together. The nurse in hospital cleaned all my mums hand. I believe that you can put padding in between old peoples hands to stop them clenching them.
My Mum had wax in her ear the size of a cigarette end. A nurse removed it in hospital. I think it is disgusting that the Manager didn't take my concerns seriously and refused to talk to me as I am her daughter who actually stays with her when I come home. What was even worse was the carer in question turned up at my Mum's funeral. Why should this be allowed after I have asked for her not to be sent again? I know the carers only get given a certain time etc, but the way my Mum was left is disgusting. The fact that the Manager said they wouldn't speak to me is terrible as my sister in law does not have power of attorney either.
