"A poem about struggling with hearing loss"

About: Kings Cross Health and Community Care Centre / Audiology Service

(as the patient),

A poem about struggling with hearing loss.

What???
I’m getting old
I’m getting deaf.
Saps my confidence. It makes me wary.
Traveling by bus is really scary.

I miss the bird song, but not barking dogs.
I miss loving words, but not his snoring.
I hate silent bikes, chattering diners,
Missing subtitles, crackly telephones.

I’m getting deaf.
I’m getting old.
I do need help on my life’s Odyssey.
I am grateful for Audiology.
The staff listen and they do hear my needs.
For hearing aids and for comforting deeds.

Dear melw23

A big Thank You from Audiology for this lovely poem. You are very talented. We have a Huddle twice a week where all staff attend and I will take great delight in reading this out to them. I am very pleased to hear that you are listened too and your needs are met by our Team of Audiologists.

Thank You Again

Dear melw23

I just wanted to let you know that I read your poem at the Audiology Huddle yesterday to all our staff and they gave you a round of applause. Thank you so much for taking the time to write the poem, it really does make a difference to the staff when someone takes the time to do something nice like this.

Best wishes

I am so glad. I try to stay positive and writing poetry helps.

Two-faced January makes me wary.

It pretends that all is upbeat and new.

But last year’s problems were really scary.

My current life is still very askew.

But the nights are slowly getting lighter,

Although the weather is bitterly cold,

My mood is definitely much brighter,

So I’ll persevere and smile and be bold.
