"Maternity care and safe delivery of baby boy"

About: South West Acute Hospital / Maternity care

(as the patient),

I attended the SWAH for induction due to having gestational diabetes.

From the moment I arrived I was cared for at the highest standards, well informed throughout the process in fetal assessment before being admitted to the ward.

On arrival to the ward I was showed to my room and welcomed and asked for anything I might need. I was then allowed to leave the ward to walk and grab food before my husband had to depart. The girls were very accommodating to any request or silly question I might have had.

Following morning I was admitted to the labour ward where my waters were broke and it switched from night to day staff. Here I meet my midwife for the day Lauren and student Joanne. Lauren was previously the student nurse who was at the delivery of my first child, it was nice to see a familiar, friendly face.

The girls put me at ease during the whole process, kept me calm and aided me in any request I might have had. They helped and advised on pain relief and gave me encouragement throughout. The team all came together to finally deliver my little boy by suction cup after pushing for the appropriate amount of time. He was delivered safe and sound in a calm and controlled environment, which meant a lot to me as a hypno birthing mum.

The team got me cleaned up and allowed me the golden hour and opportunity to try breastfeeding. From here the team allowed us time to bond as a new family and allow my husband to have skin to skin time too.

We then were returned to the ward where the maternity assistants and midwives were on hand to help get the baby to feed and settled in.

Can’t thank the whole team enough for their help on the day and days after. From the cleaners, maternity assistant a special mention to Colleen, to the head of the maternity ward Brenda who got me ready for home.

You made the whole experience special and homely. Never been as well cared for, and can’t thank them all enough! You ladies are amazing!
