What I liked

Attended Badger out of hours service with sick baby on a Sunday evening. Medical attention was good. But given a prescription that I was unable to transact!

What could be improved

Admin staff not so good. They gave incorrect details of a late night pharmacy that was actually closed on a Sunday!!

Having chased round all over with a sick baby in the car, I rang back central Badger services, who eventually got details of a late night pharmacist that was open till 23.00 hours.

Why don't all of the centres have a full list of out of hours pharmacists so that patients can choose where to go.

Or better still offer a dispensing service giving a small overnight supply of prescription medicine (esp. for babies) so that the poor sick child isn't dragged all over town in an attempt to get prescription filled!!

Just to clarify, and for your added reassurance, if your baby child was an A&E patient or in-patient at Heartlands Hospital, he /she would have been given any medication required as is normal practice from an Acute Trust provider.

The BADGER service is a consortium of local doctors established to see patients out of normal GP working hours. Practices simply leave an answer phone message on their surgery phone when the surgery is closed. This invites patients in need of emergency medical attention to ring the BADGER call centre for advice or an appointment. One of the centres for seeing patients is located at Heartlands Hospital with others conveniently located at Selly Oak Hospital, Solihull Hospital, Good Hope Hospital and Birmingham Childrens Hospital. It is also worth noting, the BADGER service is not a ‘walk-in service’ and is funded by the Primary Care Trust.
