"Time to reflect, contemplate, relax"

About: Change Grow Live Dame Carol Detoxification Service

(as a service user),

I requested referral to detox through CGL and due to a recently diagnosed heart condition it was determined that residential, medically supervised detox was the appropriate solution.

The Dame Carol Black centre was proposed mid 2022.

I had pretty much given up on it ever happening after many months of delay without any real explanation, but then out of the blue a place became available at two days notice.  I couldn't attend due to jury service, but

fortunately another place became available very quickly.

On arrival the welcome was fantastic. The facilities are excellent and the staff are all exceptional. The whole ethos that pervades from top down and throughout is positive and surely has a positive impact upon clients.

I have now come through detox without any problems or issues and thinking positively about the future without alcohol as a primary focus.

I was apprehensive about spending 12 days with a bunch of strangers, but am surprised to have made some really strong friendships.

This detox provides a time to reflect / contemplate and relax and constant  daytime tv and shoot up action films constantly blaring is a real unwelcome distraction so perhaps some curfew or at least consensus would be helpful to many.

It would also have been helpful to have the handbook sent in advance because it contains a lot of pre-visit information that I didn't see until I arrived (not sure whether CGL should have sent it, but no-one did).

All in all though I would strongly recommend to anyone.

Hello Paul 55;

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave us feedback with regards to your treatment journey with us.

It's lovely to read you had such a positive experience with us. The team endeavour to always ensure your stay here is as comfortable as it can be so it's great to hear you felt both the facilities and staff were exceptional.

It's a shame to hear you felt the TVs were a distraction. We have two seperate living areas to enable service users to have more of a choice of programmes to watch and/or to play games or read. We ensure TVs are off during groups and meetings to minimise disruption but completely understand your frustration at the noise during all other times throughout the day.

I can certainly feed back your thoughts on a TV curfew, however we do keep TV screening to a minimum during the evening/night due to being flexible and accommodating to other service users. We do try to encourage service users to make staff aware if they're feeling uncomfortable or unsatisfied so thank you for making us aware.

We encourage your keyworker to sit with you and show you both the Handbook and our YouTube video of the unit prior to your arrival to help settle any nerves or answer any possible questions you may have, I can only apologise that this didn't happen.

We're really thankful for your feedback, I shall pass on your kind words to the team and we wish you all the best for the future.
