"The care received by a number of departments within GRI and SAS"

About: Coatbridge Locality Support Service / Community Nursing Team Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Accident & Emergency Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Critical Care Unit (ICU/HDU) Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Elderly Medicine (12, 14, 18, 23, 29, 30, 32, 33,35 ,39 & 53) Glasgow Royal Infirmary / General Surgery (wards 63, 64, 65, 66,& 67) Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Theatres, Recovery and Anaesthetics Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance

(as a relative),

My husband became unwell in July 2022, by the beginning of August I needed to call an ambulance due to deterioration, whilst his observations were normal, the crew agreed he should go to hospital.  A&E staff at GRI agreed he was unwell although it was unclear what and he was admitted to Ward 53 (I think - it was upstairs from A&E). Staff were excellent at communication and within a few hours of admission his bowel perforated.  The surgeon kept me updated at every point before and after surgery. He was transferred to ICU West where he remained ventilated for several weeks after suffering significant complications. Every member of staff in ICU from every discipline were caring, compassionate and saved him more than once.

Once transferred to surgical (Ward 64) he made good improvements and was discharged.  Unfortunately he deteriorated quickly and again SAS responded quickly and got him back to A&E, he was readmitted to surgical ward (66) and transferred back to 64 where he stayed for a few weeks being stabilized.  Again, every member of staff in every discipline just stepped in cared and gave such reassurance and high quality care and communication.  Nutritional nurses gave us training to allow him to come home on PN feed.  Stoma and wound care nurses were just amazing and very responsive.  Medical staff and ward staff were kind, compassionate and very flexible to not just my husband but family and friends, happily answering questions our 10 year old granddaughter was asking.  Now he is at home and the care we continue to receive from nutritional team, stoma team, surgical team at Mr Steven's clinics is second to none.  The district nurse from North Lanarkshire NHS are visiting the house weekly and again are so responsive to any requests.

I wanted to nominate the care teams for awards recently but couldn't figure out how to nominate so many people, they worked together seamlessly to save my husband and get him back to health.  He's still got a way to go, but honestly, thank you seems insufficient for all the care we have received.  At a time where NHS is having real difficulties, it is important that staff hear that without them, my husband wouldn't be here.  I am forever grateful and proud to say I am an NHSGG&C nurse.  Everyone should be proud to be part of such a wonderful organisation.

Dear Nurse on the other side

Thank you for sharing your story.

It sounds like it was a really worrying time for you all.

It is lovely to receive such kind words for everyone involved in your husband's care.

If you would like me to pass on your kind words to the ambulance crews that attended may I ask that you contact our Patient Experience Team with your name, Care Opinion name, your husband's name and the dates and addresses we attended.

I do hope he is making a steady recovery.

Kindest regards

David

Dear Nurse on the other side,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your family's journey through our healthcare system. I cannot begin to imagine how scared you must have been, I think being a nurse would only make this worse for you. I am relieved to hear that your husband is now on the road to recovery.

In a world which seems to have many negatives it is so important for our Teams to hear the positive outcomes from all their hard work, this inspires us to continue going the extra mile to make the difference and to strive to improve our services.

I will share your lovely words with all the Surgical Wards and Teams mentioned in your Story.

I wish you and family all the best for the future.

Dear Nurse On The Other Side

We really appreciate you taking the time to share the story of you and your husbands illness and care during what must have been a very scary time. As others have commented above being "on the other side" can be very difficult, I am glad that you both have had such a positive experience of all the services involved in his care.

I am part of the team in ward 53, although he was only in our unit for a short period I am so pleased that the care and communication was good. I know that the rest of the team will be similarly heartened by your communication and will make sure it is fed back to them.

With best wishes for his continued recovery.
