I recently underwent a fasciectomy on my left hand at the New Victoria ACH, Glasgow, using a nerve block. The team that looked after me were excellent. I arrived at 0730 and was introduced to two nurses who explained the process for the day and generally provided an aura of calmness. The conversation with the anaesthetist was informative and we decided on doing the operation under a nerve block rather than general anaesthetic. At no time did I feel pressured into a decision.
During the procedure of the nerve block the anaesthetist enthusiastically explained what he was doing and spent some time doing the same in more detail to a training doctor. The faciectomy took 1.5 hours and throughout I was being looked after by a dedicated nurse and the anaesthetist. The operating team of a surgeon, registrar, and training doctor were focused on the task at hand and I did not interact with them. The conversational pieces I overheard were all very professional and clearly educational for the trainee and registrar. The overall sense was of a very competent team in the operating theatre.
There were several more people present, but I was not aware of them until the operation was complete and I was able to see the entire room. I thanked everyone as I was wheeled out and direcly back to the cubicle I was assigned when I arrived. I was provided a drink and some food, and 30 minutes later I dressed myself one-handed. The nurses from the morning offered to help of course but I wanted to find out if if I could do it myself. After some trial and error with socks I managed and was discharged. I was home again at 1500. Total time in the hospital was 6.5 hours. Throughout the whole experience I had a comforting sense of professionalism and care from all staff I encountered. Thank you.
