I attended my GP practice to enquire about being referred for assessment to the mental health team.
I suspected I had ADHD and wanted to explore this further. I was told that ADHD assessments were no longer being referred and advised to go private. The mental health practitioner I spoke with told me that they would advance my referral but strongly suggested I go private as an ADHD assessment wouldn't be offered on the NHS. I did as advised and spent approx £1000 on a private assessment.
I then contacted my GP practice, as advised, to share the outcome of the assessment and ask for a follow-up appointment, as was suggested by the psychologist who assessed me. At this point I was told that my practice would not accept my assessment outcome and I was to wait for my appointment from the NHS to come through. This is 6 months after initial referral. I explained that I was advised to go private and that the assessment had determined I did in fact have ADHD but was told there was nothing else they can do. So I am now left £1000 out of pocket, no further forward and stuck. I am so disappointed in my GP practice and don't know where to go now. I can't afford to self-fund medication but feel like that is my only option.
I feel that being advised to go private in the first instance was a departure from what the NHS stands for, but for the outcome of that assessment not to be given any weight just makes me feel like I don't matter.
