"One small detail"

About: Queen Margaret Hospital / Oral Surgery & Medicine

(as the patient),

Everything was absolutely excellent except for one small detail which I feel I should give feedback. After having had my teeth extracted I was back in the ward recovering from the general anaesthetic. I was given water to drink through a straw, it was not until the consultant passed by to check on me some hours later before my discharge that they remarked and rebuked me for drinking through a straw - explaining that it might dislodge the clots forming on the wound sites. Surely the nurse who provided me with the water and straw should have known otherwise.

Thank you for taking the time to post feedback, glad to see that you were well cared for during your stay. Apologies to you for having a straw to drink with, this has been discussed and shared with the team that we should no longer give patients a straw if they are having particular surgery that there is a risk of dislodging clots.

We wish you well in your recovery

Nola and the day surgery team
