"My hip replacement"

About: Trauma & orthopaedics / Orthopaedic National Treatment Centre

(as the patient),

My hip operation was in March and I was admitted to the new National Orthopaedic Unit at Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy which had just opened.

The new unit is wonderful and all the staff were all very friendly and efficient. I loved the fact that I was immediately taken to a room where I was informed I would be seen by everyone involved in my operation. Indeed, the nurses, the anaesthetist and the consultant all came and went through what was going to happen. It was really nice to know who was doing the operation.

After that I was taken to a bay to wait to go down to theatre. Didn’t have to wait too long . A nurse came and walked me down to theatre. I opted for a spinal anaesthetic and the process was straightforward, though it’s a very strange feeling. I woke up sometime later and it was all over. Never felt a thing. I was taken back to the ward and was delighted that I had my own room. The nurses on the ward were very attentive and I was checked on all the time and given regular painkillers. Managed to have a bit of sleep through the night. Next day breakfast in bed. Still no toast as there was a problem with it.

Time for physio. I needed a lot of support and physio was very good. I was able to use my tablet as I had downloaded the HealthZone app, which I am using at home.

Got the go ahead to go home after a visit from my consultant. Couldn’t be more happy.

My experience was excellent and I felt very relaxed about what was going to happen to me. I can’t praise all of the team enough.

Dear Auriqadh66,

Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback of recent stay in the National Treatment Centre. As the centre has just recently opened, it is a very new but excitable time for staff.

I am glad to hear that you were well informed of operation and that you felt the staff had been friendly towards you.

Mobilising usually it the most difficult process after an operation. I will inform the physiotherapy staff that you felt they were very good with you and a good support. Keep up with the exercises it will make such a difference in your ongoing recovery.

The toast is still an issue at the minute, however we are hoping to have this rectified within the next week.

As a team we wish you all the best with your ongoing recovery,

Best Wishes,

Aileen and the NTC team
