Lower back pain, sciatic nerve pain right leg.
Hobbled into ED, approached receptionist who took my details, spoke quietly and didn't have to repeat myself via microphone.
Department was busy with 2 people sprawled across the seats taking up to 2-3 spaces. Coffee machine was working and as I approached it after giving my details I was advised by someone to use card and not money as coins were not being accepted.
Seating very uncomfortable, especially for anyone with a sore back. I attempted to sit right back but my feet were dangling so had to put bag in at my back to bring myself forward so feet were touching the ground! Had to keep getting up to stand every 10 mins as back and leg very sore.
40 mins called in to be triaged: nurse introduced self- asked when I had last taken pain killers - pain score/scale was not asked. Observations were taken and recorded. Time passed by, and then called through to cubicle. Seen by doctor who introduced himself as Charlie. Took my history and explained plan - analgesia - Back Xray - MRI as outpatient.
Very good service; staff all friendly and approachable, including radiologist who didn't rush me as he could see I was in pain and offered to help. Police presence was there so everyone was on their best behaviour towards staff! The pharmacist explained in detail medications on discharge
ED often taken for granted and negative stories, but from my experience I have nothing but praise 👏Thank you
"Staff all friendly and approachable"
