My Dad is in his mid 80's, has Dementia and after a bout of sickness and a fall he was taken by ambulance to the RAH in the early hours of the morning.
Dad had blood tests done and an X ray but was left in a corridor of A &E for 12 hours before going to Medical assesment ward 2.
I was present when a Doctor sounded Dad's chest and said he had a Chest infection, Antibiotics to follow and provided No more old blood sickness he would be home the next day.
When I phoned the following afternoon to ask if he was coming home I was told, he was not there! He had been put in Ward 27.
I got to ward 27 a few hours later to see my Dad had NO WATER jug! How many hours had he gone without fluids? My Dad needs given fluids and prompted as he doesn't remember to drink. His catheter bag was dark showing he was on the verge on dehydration!
I asked to get Dad home. Told he needed assessed by Physio & would need a care package. I explained over & over that Dad has a Care Package at home already and is also under the memory clinic who do home visits from psycology, social work & physio plus my Mum is his Carer & I support them both.
I repeatedly asked to get Dad home. I was told by his carers they were ready to resume Dad's care but they had not been contacted by the Care at home team! I found out my Dad was being treated as a New Referral even though I repeatedly told several staff he already has a Care Package and support at home!
After 2 days of constant calls, I finally got my Dad home transported by the Red Cross. I told ward 27 that his carers would be there in the evening to do Dad's Tuck-in.
Our carer arrived to witness how my Dad had been sent home! Wearing just a hospital gown & underpants! No trousers and his incontinence pad was not even on properly.
Dad was dirty & so neglected looking.
The carer agreed it seemed he hadn't been washed in days! I was heart broken to see my Dad this way, ripped of all dignity. And yes he had Pajamma trousers & joggers in his bag that came home with him.
Human beings should be treated with respect and dignity
"A lack of respect and dignity"
