"The medical teams at ERI are truly deserving of praise"

About: Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / Accident & Emergency Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / Respiratory Medicine

(as the patient),

After suffering a chronic and agonising pain in my right side for 5 weeks, the pain and lack of sleep drove me from GP care to attending ERI A&E in mid April. I felt a complete fraud but was at the end of my tether. The team that afternoon could not have been more kind and considerate and even although they had emergency admissions coming in, they took the time to listen to me, and took my concerns seriously. A multitude of tests were carried out and indeed I was very impressed that they also dialled into results of tests that my GP practice had requested but had failed to deliver those results to me. This helped the A&E team narrow down areas of concern for them.  After 3 to 4 hours of tests they requested the attendance of a Doctor from the Surgical Observations department who immediately arranged for me to attend the following Monday for scans. The nurse who took care of me was a delight that day and am sorry I cannot remember her name but she had blonde hair tied back in a ponytail and was perhaps an advanced practice registered nurse?

On Monday I attended for an Ultrasound and then transferred next door to Surgical Observations. A lovely nurse name Roslynn took my bloods but for the rest of the day there (9 hours) I was in the care of Angela. Angela is so worthy of special recognition for the job she does and the way she does it. She ensured that I was kept informed as a variety of tests were carried out and results received and assessed. When results were not as expected Angela ensured that further CT scans were carried out and referrals were put to the Respiratory Dept, all the while ensuring that I was kept informed. Dr Cartilage, I think her name was, could not have been more enquiring and investigative in her approach from the Respiratory team.

I arrived to ERI with my GP looking at tests for a stomach infection such as Helicobacter but your teams, between A&E and Surgical Observations, realised that for 5 weeks I had indeed had a lung infection and my right lung contained fluid and the extreme pain was pleurisy.

I have been prescribed the correct meds and a follow-up appointment has been arranged with the Respiratory Consultant for the beginning on June.

The care and consideration shown to me has shown the dedication of these teams and their ability to quickly adapt to each individual that walks through the door. Over both my visits your teams had to deal with customers who I would choose to avoid at all costs, but they were treated with nothing but kindness and understanding by your teams, how they manage this I don't know...truly they are angels.

I often think as a society we are quick to complain and very slow to praise but the medical teams at ERI are truly deserving of praise and I cannot thank them enough. I would be grateful if these two departments are notified of the very grateful thanks and praise
