I had a total shoulder replacement. I was admitted through the Day Surgery department and spent the night in their unit. The care from start to finish was amazing. My shoulder replacement was my 15th surgery at Crosshouse Hospital, and I have always received first class treatment and care.
This was my first time staying in the Day Surgery unit and there were a few things that would make things easier for both the staff and patients. The toilet facilities for patients are staff toilets. They are quite a long walk and are not equipped for someone who has just had surgery. The ladies toilet is very small and has a very difficult folding door and a heavy entry door. There are no buzzers in this unit for the patient to get help from a member of staff. You have to call out, which isn't ideal during the night as you are disturbing all the other patients.
The cubicle where you sleep is divided by KwickScreens. These are like plastic partitions with pictures on them, eg seaside scenes, ocean scenes etc. They are very nice to look at and probably hygienic but they are quite claustrophobic. Some patients prefer complete privacy but others like to interact and chat with fellow patients. The cubicles are also very small making it difficult for the staff to manoeuvre to help the patients.
The reason I am pointing out these issues is to hopefully help future patients and staff. I would like to thank every member of staff involved in my recent hospital stay. You are all my heroes ❤️
