One morning in April I attended what was meant to be a routine CPN appointment at St Andrews Community Hospital. When I arrived I was met by the CPN in the corridor and walked to a room where the door was closed. As they opened the door they told me we were joined by a psychiatrist and mental health officer. It soon started to feel to me I had been tricked into attending the appointment and I felt ambushed by these professionals. As an autistic adult who is frightened of the unknown and unexpected, I panicked. I’ve got trauma from a previous admission to a psychiatric ward so when I started to believe they had a hidden agenda of admitting me to hospital I left the appointment.
I was later met by the police who informed me I had been sectioned. I’d like to highlight that in order the meet the criteria for the detainment I believe the psychiatrist lied about my state of mind and mental capacity.
While in hospital I consulted a solicitor who filed my appeal of the detainment and arranged a mental health tribunal hearing. Myself and my solicitor had a strong case with my own statement and a report from an independent psychiatrist supporting my request for my treatment to be community based. A time and date was set for the tribunal, however the consultant psychiatrist on the ward revoked the detention certificate on the day of the tribunal. I believe this action was taken in an attempt to silence me because they knew I wasn’t happy about how I was treated.
Moral of the story, never trust anyone - titles can be deceiving.
