I contacted the surgery and requested a face to face appointment as I had an abscess that was situated deep within my cheek. I told the receptionist that I needed to see a doctor as this was not something that I felt could be successfully diagnosed over the phone. The receptionist told me that she had spoken to the doctor, and that the doctor was confident in their ability to diagnose me over the phone, and that a face to face appointment was not necessary. My initial encounter with the receptionist was that she was quite rude. I did not recieve a call back from the doctor that day. The following day I again contacted the surgery to try and get an appointment as my condition had worsened. This time I was fortunate enough to have been graced with a telephone appointment . I explained to the doctor that I had an abscess inside of my cheek that had formed very hard pustules which oozed a thick greenish-yellow discharge upon lancing. The doctor asked if I was avaliable to come to the surgery. However, as the doctor had previously asserted their confidence in giving a diagnosis over the phone, and the prior rudeness of the receptionist, I declined this as it seemed unnecessary. The doctor proceed to prescribe me a mild antibiotics for a skin infection. The doctor advised me that if the infection got worse I should attend a&e. Unsurprisingly the abscess in my cheek got substantially worse. Significantly so, that I have had to attend a&e on two consecutive dates to have the abscess in my cheek drained. Needless to say this has been a very traumatic experience, and one that could have been entirely avoided had I been offed a face to face appointment when I first contacted the practice. Had the doctor agreed to see me on my initial presentation they may have been able to prescribe the correct antibiotics on my initial consultation that would have removed the need for me to have invasive surgical treatment at my local hospitals accident and emergency department. Which would have been preferable for myself, and would have cost the nhs significantly less money.
