"Kidney stone and stent"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / General surgery (Wards 9a, 9b, 9c & 9d)

(as the patient),

I was sent to the hospital by my GP in February with suspected kidney stone. I sat in waiting room for 7 hours all in at the Surgical Assessment Unit in the Queen Elizabeth - one of the nurses said they hardly think it’s a kidney stone, probably just a urine infection. I was then told they were too busy to scan me that day, so was sent home and would get a phone call the next morning to come over for a scan.

The next morning I got a call to say they were too busy so I’d have to come the next day after that. By this time I was in terrible pain, I suffered it out until the next day, then went back for the scan. By that time I was so ill my body was shaking, my temperature was through the roof, I could hardly talk.

I got the scan and a few hours later it showed that the kidney stone was stuck and had caused a really bad infection. I was admitted and got surgery that night - I thought to have the stone removed. I found out when I woke up after surgery I was septic and that I had a stent put in my urethra to hopefully let the stone pass and to keep my tube from blocking.

I was in hospital for a full week as my temperature wouldn’t come down, my infection markers went to over 300 when I was told they should be between 0-10. I had to get another scan to find out why and the doctor said my kidney was very inflamed so had antibiotics through a drip for the week.

When I got home it took me weeks to recover from infection and the stent was really sore. I thought after a while it would get better, but it’s got worse every day. The stent causes me so much pain I can’t walk far without having blood in my urine, I struggle to work but I don’t get paid when I’m off so I need to live on painkillers to get me through it. I’ve been an emotional wreck, begging doctors and nurses to help me, I’m struggling with family life as I’m in so much pain every day. I’m taking it out on people I love.

I had been sent back to hospital by GP. I’ve had another scan that shows my stone is completely stuck and won’t pass itself. I'm begging for the stone to be taken out so I can have the stent removed cause I can’t take much more of this pain, I can’t even walk my son to school without bleeding.

I have been given every pain killer and muscle relaxer possible, nothing is helping me.

My doctor has put me through twice as an urgent referral and I’ve still heard nothing. I honestly can’t take much more and I have no idea how long I will have to wait to get any help as all I get is painkillers and they are not helping.

Dear Deedaw

I am sorry to hear of your experience whilst attending the Surgical Assessment Unit at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

Unfortunately, there can be extended waiting times for review by the clinical team when the demand is high.

I am sorry about your on-going issues with the kidney stone and the stent, and for the negative impact on your quality of life and your family’s.

Your feedback has been shared with the senior clinical and management team. We would be keen to discuss this with you in more detail, If you wish to do so, can you please contact Jamie Clark, Lead Nurse on 0141 451 6110.

Thank you
