"Emergency care for a painful eye"

About: Outpatients Department / Clinic 6 - Ophthalmology

(as a service user),

My husband had a sore eye and the original diagnosis was viral conjunctivitis. After a few days his eye was very painful and there was a yellow discharge. I rang a couple of high street opticians as it was a Saturday. Unfortunately they had no emergency appointments so I decided to try a local optician. I was surprised that they were open. A very helpful receptionist took the details . She explained that she needed to ask a few triage questions. She listened carefully and was reassuring.

Shortly  afterwards an optician called Laura phoned back. She explained that my husband needed urgent attention and said that she would make time to see him. When we arrived the opticians was really busy so my husband and myself appreciated that the optician was going above and beyond to make time to see him.

Laura examined his eye and explained why he was in so much pain.  She put in pain relief drops and prepared his eyes so that they would be ready for examination at Altnagelvin Hospital. He was given a letter to bring to the emergency eye clinic at the hospital. My husband would like to thank the optician for her help. She was very professional. She explained everything clearly and took time to reassure him. The practice was very busy so we both would like to thank the staff at the opticians for the excellent service provided.

I took my husband to the emergency eye clinic at Altnagelvin Hospital. We had an emergency letter from the opticians. A receptionist took my husband’s details. She confirmed some details and then took us through to a waiting area. Shortly afterwards my husband was seen by a doctor/specialist. My husband can’t remember his name but said that he was excellent. He was helpful and reassuring. He explained that he had an eye ulcer and blepharitis and took time to supply my husband with some emergency drops and a letter for his GP. We would like to thank the receptionist and the doctor for their help.
