I had an appointment to have a coil fitted on 22nd June. It was going to be the first time, attending Sandyford, and was nervous, because I have severe anxiety of hospital and medical examinations and partly because some reviews seemed so negative.
I must say I was pleasantly surprised! The reception area/lobby, toilets as well as the examination room were super clean. Deborah invited me for my appointment and went through some questions on my medical and sexual health background. I like that she asked whether I am in a safe relationship too. Deborah was fantastic and her tone and manner were so calming that I felt comfortable immediately.
She explained the process and that a nurse would be in the room, as well, and confirmed that I was happy to go ahead and whether I wanted local anesthesia, which I did not require. The nurse who joined was Sef who introduced himself and explained that he was there to help and I could hold his hand or ask for water, if needed. Asked Sef to be talking or singing to me so I could be distracted and he kindly did both!
The tests and fitting the coil were a quick process and I was offered a pad at the end and some water. Deborah went over some information on what to expect during the next few weeks and when to get in touch if needed. She gave me a booklet on the IUD where she added the date the coil was fitted and by whom as well as the date it should be removed. Deborah and Sef are a great team, thank you!
