"Lack of support from CMHT"

About: Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust / Adult mental health

(as a carer),

My partner came to St Marys due to a decline in mental health. When she arrived she found she had a mental health diagnosis that she wasn't told about, which the Community Mental Health Team (CMHT) where treating her for. She then researched the diagnosis to find she didn't agree with diagnosis, she was assigned a psychologist whom was treating her for a diagnosis that she didn't have. She then asked for change of psychiatrist which took 3 years to do she asked for change of diagnosis which took 3 years also.

She struggled and expressed that she needed help and dissagreed with the diagnosis, she then found out herself that she had autism and wasn't treated correctly by the service.  She was told by a mental health nurse when she attempted suicide that she was a problem and the ambulance needed to take her away as she was causing problems (tried to end her life). Said person spoke to her another time before on the phone and basically told her she was attention seeking because of the diagnosis she has.

When she felt suicidal she was left unsupported she worked with the psychologist, fighting to get diagnosis changed but was unable to achieve any meaningful therapy with psychologist because of this.

When they sorted a new psychiatrist and a new diagnosis the CMHT decided then to end her therapy with the psychologist whom was supporting her massively with new diagnosis, leaving her with no therapy and in severe crisis. Said psychologist was heavily supporting her because her Community Psychiatric Nurse (CPN) she was just assigned had left. The psychiatrist refused to listen and now her meaningful support and care has been removed and no medication assigned, leaving her vulnerable and unsupported by the service., no other therapy assigned and an excruciating new diagnosis which no one now helps her with,  leaving her to deal with it alone and in crisis. This is no fault of hers that the psychiatrist wouldn't allow reassessment.

I feel it disgusting for a CPN to tell her she was a problem more than once when she was at risk of herself.

I feel it disgusting that her only valuable help she did have  has now been taken away and nothing else is offered, leaving her worse now than when she arrived.

We have been to pals and feel we have been ignored there also. Where do I complain now? As people's lives are at serious risk , especially when she is engaging and willing to work with them for help, but they are offering nothing. .

Dear Smithy89

My name is Sam Marshall, and I am a Quality and Patient Safety Lead for the Trust.

I am really saddened to read of your experience of our Community Mental Health Team. I would firstly like to take this opportunity to thank you for taking the time to post your concerns as I appreciate that this is not always an easy thing to do. I have shared your feedback with the Senior Leadership Team for Working Age Adult CMHTs and they are keen to consider further. I would like to urge you to contact the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) directly on 0800 052 5790 or by email: pals.lypft@nhs.net, in order that your concerns can be reviewed in greater detail – this would really assist us with ensuring we fully understand your concerns and can take action to learn and improve. I am sorry that you have found your past experience of contact with the PALS team to not be helpful and would appreciate you allowing us the opportunity to rectify that. The PALS team will be able to triage your concerns to the Trusts complaints process.

If you do not want to contact the Trust you can access free, independent, and confidential support with The Advonet Group. You can access advocacy to support you in making a complaint and they offer advocacy to address issues you are your loved ones are facing with care. You can email office@advonet.org.uk or call 01132440606 and they have a website with information; https://advonet.org.uk/.

I can sense from your posting that this must have been a really difficult time for you and really worrying, I hope that you are also receiving the support you require, information is available on the Carers Leeds website: https://www.carersleeds.org.uk/.

Kind regards

Sam Marshall
