I have been receiving care under the perinatal mental health team for 5 months now. A 'finding me' support group was made available to me following discharge from the mother and baby unit.
The MDT approach in my care has been excellent and the communication between professionals has been flawless allowing me to transition from inpatient to managing and enjoying time with my baby at home. Initially I was hesitant to take part, but Emma's positive approach and attitude enabled me to reflect on what is important to me in life.
Emma, the OT, made me feel welcome and safe. I was vulnerable and apprehensive at the time. Emma created a supportive and kind environment that allowed me to make friends with some other mums and explore our difficulties, achievements and goals without being overwhelmed. The nursery nurses, Louise and Sandra, took care of the babies while we worked on personal projects each week.I enjoyed seeing my baby interacting with others and take part in baby sensory activities and book bugs. It meant that I could really focus on myself knowing my baby was happy and playing. This class, over 10 weeks, has helped me to feel more confident in myself, explore my values and remind myself of what I enjoy and need to do to maintain mental health. They made the environment friendly and I felt listened to.Emma, Louise and Sandra allowed me to realise I am more than just a mum and how it is important to pursue hobbies and interests too, without it being selfish.I liked the loose structure of the class and Emma gave us tasks to do over the week to implement in our day-to-day lives. This meant that any goals made felt achievable. The staff were kind, discreet, knowledgeable and supportive. They created a positive environment, one that benefited me and my baby. I am starting to feel like me again and really value what I gained from this group. .Some of the group still meet each Wednesday, to have coffee and a chat. I think that highlights the success of the group. I would like to thank the perinatal team for creating such an environment where supportive relationships are made and positive experiences are the gained whilst I rediscover my zest for life.
