"Excellent care at Wishaw General Ward 20"

About: University Hospital Monklands / Emergency Department University Hospital Wishaw / Paediatrics wards (19 & 20)

(as a parent/guardian),

My 9 year old celebrated his birthday by leaping through a glass door and doing some damage to his legs. After an initial trip to A&E at Monklands where the staff treated my son and myself with great care to clean X-ray and bandage our wounds we were transferred to Wishaw General paediatric ward 20 for my son to be put under to have his wounds cleaned more thoroughly and stitched up. We needed an overnight stay so he could fast for the op. Every single member of staff was brilliant. All of them patient, kind, considerate and incredibly good at their job. Surgeon Adam could have a side hustle as a kids comedian; he had my son laughing all the way down to surgery making the whole process as relaxed as possible for him. He was allowed to take his stuffed giraffe in with him and when he woke up his Giraffe had matching bandages which gave him another thing to smile about on an otherwise traumatic birthday weekend.

His treatment was exceptional, aftercare has been explained in detail and while we haven’t seen the handiwork of the stitches yet we have no doubt that they’ve been done to a high standard. My son was very lucky his injuries weren’t more serious. The staff of both hospitals did an amazing job of reassuring us all and managing our distress and pain. My son is now at home with his matching giraffe enjoying some belated birthday cake with a smile on his face. Thank you to everyone involved in his care. It means the world. I hope government policy changes to recognise the incredible work of our NHS staff and the life changing impact that you all have which should remain free so that every single member of our communities can access essential healthcare. Forget the pots and pans, I hope your pay begins to reflect your level of service. Thank you.

Thank you so much for your positive feedback around your recent visit to Ward 20 at Wishaw General.

It is very kind of you to take the time to praise our staff and the care that your family received. We will pass on all of your comments to the Team in Ward 20 who will appreciate every word.

It must have been a very traumatic birthday weekend for the whole family, so great to hear that your son is recovering well, hopefully Giraffe is too!

Thanks again

Jill Lockhart
