"This team were awesome"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Emergency Department University Hospital Hairmyres / Radiology

(as the patient),

Sent to Hairmyers A&E by GP with very high blood pressure. GP called ahead and when I arrived reception took details. Within 10 minutes of arriving I was called through and escorted to a triage room by a very nice, kind nurse.

A young nurse, Jordan, verified my details before taking my blood pressure and also took an ECG . The ward manager, Laura, then came and took my bloods and organised some tea for me. A very nice young consultant nurse, Allan, then came in and explained that he was going to send me for an x-ray of my heart ,checked behind my eyes and asked me to do a urine sample.

All the time everyone of these nurses explained what they were going to do and why these tests were being performed. The radiographer ( sorry didn't get her name) who took my x-ray was also very kind and explained everything.

When all the tests were done and I was waiting to be seen with the results I and everyone in waiting area were offered tea ,coffee, sandwich and a biscuit by the same young nurse, Jordan, who had initially taken my blood pressure. My blood pressure was then repeated by another young nurse. ( sorry didn't get her name).

The doctor, Claire, then called me through and verified that I did in fact have high blood pressure, which would require taking medication but no damage had been done to my heart, kidneys or eyes. She then gave me a prescription for the medication and a letter for my doctor to follow up my future care. 

I went into the hospital, stressed, afraid and fearing the worst, knowing my family history of stroke. I left feeling much calmer ,not afraid and relieved knowing that the symptoms were being treated. Having worked in the NHS, I know how difficult it can be. I also recognise that the service is under the most stressful conditions it has ever experienced and every day is more stressful. I am very thankful to have been treated by such a kind ,caring ,professional team who still have time for looking after their patients showing true empathy. 

Hairmyers management team should be very proud of this staff group and hopefully tell them so. They deserve to be recognised and thanked for their great work in very stressful working conditions.

This team were awesome and everyone who caught your eye smiled at you or said hello. 

What started out as a terrifying ordeal for me ended up with me feeling more positive about the situation .

I am so pleased to hear that you have no lasting damage following your high blood pressure and that it can be helped with medication. Thank you for your very detailed experience, I am sure this will go some way to help others who are perhaps nervous, afraid or fearing the worst before attending hospital. I am so happy to hear that every staff member you encountered smiled, such a small gesture can be so comforting. I am also happy to hear how wonderfully professional all our staff were to you and how thorough they were in looking after you.
