"A good laugh gives you a wee boost"

About: Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance Victoria Hospital / Accident & Emergency Victoria Hospital / Admissions Unit 1 (Emergency Medical) Victoria Hospital / Physiotherapy Victoria Hospital / Radiology Victoria Hospital / Rapid Access and Discharge

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

Unfortunately I had an accident in my truck and had to be brought into hospital by ambulance.

They brought me to the Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy The ambulance crew were sound they kept me safe put me at ease I felt no pressure from them at all just good banter during the journey with a little bit of Gas & air to ease the pain.

I was taken to a cubicle in the Accident & Emergency Department The nurses there were very nice. They examined me fully taking my blood pressure then arranging for me to have a CT scan and an x ray. There was good communication at all times.

I had no problem having the CT scan done except I kept feeling like I needed to go to the toilet The radiologist explained that I might have this sensation and not to worry about it. I just kept calm and took deep breaths.

I later went to Admissions Unit 1 The nursing staff there were so good and I found that they all went out of their way to help me in any way they could.

I was struggling with pain and was given strong pain relief I found that nothing was too much trouble for the nursing staff and this made me feel calm. Fortunately I had no broken bones.

When I was moved to ward 9 Rapid assessment discharge the Physiotherapist came to see and assess me. I was given a leg splint and a Zimmer frame.

There is good humour in ward 9 the nurses are braw you can always have a laugh and this gives you a wee boost it really does have a good atmosphere.

I have even been offered and given Tea and biscuits at 5 in the morning as I couldn't sleep.

I am spoiled with the meals in here they are really good sized portion and just perfect for me I feel so much better if I have a good meal.

My care has been very good in the Victoria Hospital

Dear staffmemberfife1

Thank you for taking the time to get in touch and give us your feedback on your recent hospital stay.

It is great to read how good you found the care and communication from staff.

Sorry to hear that you were experiencing pain during your stay, and glad it was dealt with promptly.

I will ensure your feedback is passed on to all of the teams that you mention, they will be pleased to learn how their actions contributed to such a positive patient experience - and yes humour is so important to give patients that wee boost, as you say.

I hope you are feeling much better and again thank you for your feedback.

Best Wishes

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on your experience in hospital. As a radiographer who works in CT, I can understand how the sensations you felt during your CT contrast scan were unfamiliar and unpleasant, but I am glad to hear you were given reassurance from the CT team during your examination.

I will be sure to pass this positive feedback on to the whole radiology team, as this is a real motivating tool for them all.

I wish you all the best in your recovery.

Zoë Maclaughlan

Senior Radiographer
