"No qualified Health Visitor for child's review"

About: Bromley Healthcare

Why are children's developmental reviews no longer being conducted by Health Visitors?

Why are the NHS outsourcing Health Visiting to a company who cannot provide enough Health Visitors?

My child's review was conducted by a nursery nurse (who was lovely but that is beside the point). I understand a nursery nurse will have valuable experience of child behaviour but they are not qualified nurses and in my experience more inclined to offer advice based on their own experience and opinions, rather than evidence based practice.

The nursery nurse we saw had no knowledge of the nutritional content of breastfeeding. I would expect a qualified Health Visitor to know this.

The expertise of qualified Nurse Health Visitors has been replaced by the tick box form! Technocrats and bureaucrats are replacing qualified healthcare professionals.

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on your experience of the Bromley 0-19 Health Visiting Service.

I am sorry to hear about your recent experience. If you would like to discuss this further please contact me at 0208 315 8791. Alternatively, please provide me with your child's details I.e. name and date of birth via email to bromh.feedback@nhs.net, and I can ask the lead of the Health Visiting Service to look into this and contact you.

With best wishes, Sharon

The Health Visiting Team is made up Health Visitors, Staff Nurses and Community Nursery Nurses. The team work together to provide the healthy child programme. This team structure is commonplace nationally and is not unique to Bromley Healthcare. We work closely with the commissioners of the 0-19 service to ensure that the service provided is of high quality and also uses the funding and staffing available to use wisely.

Our 1 and 2.5-year contacts are in certain circumstances delegated to a suitably qualified health professional or nursery nurse. Mandated reviews may be considered for delegation only when a health visitor has assessed suitability and is confident the staff member is competent and has the required knowledge and skills.

Community Nursery Nurses are highly trained in child development and are required to have relevant qualifications and training in place. If a child is identified as requiring any additional support at any contacts delivered by a Community Nursing Nurse this will be escalated to a health visitor who will then be able to provide additional follow-ups, this is supported by escalation policies.

Should you wish to discuss this further, please contact me on 07730 029101.

With best wishes,

Abby, Triborough Head of Public Health Nursing
