My husband attended for his first physiotherapy appointment recently following a fracture to his Humerus bone, experiencing a degree of pain since his trip he was naturally anxious as to what was going to happen!
At his appointed time Laura, the physiotherapist, came to the waiting area and called his name, as I was accompanying him she smiled warmly and welcomed us both after introducing herself. We followed her to a private treatment area and after helping my husband to a comfortable seat. She immediately reassured him and gave a brief outline as to what would happen at this primary visit.
After asking how he had acquired his injury, she then proceeded to take his medical history, again reassuring him that it would be possible for her to find any further detailed information if required.
She then observed his movements, noting his limitations, and at all times said to describe his pain level and encouraged him to stretch his sphere to a comfortable degree.
Throughout this time her relaxed but professional instruction relaxed him and myself to such a degree he was not quite enjoying but understood more what goals he could achieve with positions that were comfortable to perform in his home environment.
Before the session ended, Laura gave him written exercises and made an appointment to return at a suitable time.
Both of us gained knowledge and reassurance from the time spent with Laura and with determination and daily exercises his dexterity will improve and his quality of life will also benefit.
"Both of us gained knowledge and reassurance"
