"Lack of communication"

About: Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Trauma & orthopaedics (wards 26, 27, 61 & 62 )

(as a service user),

I have osteoporosis. Over many years I have been taking medication. Last year I had my first injection of denosumab which would replace the alendronic acid.   I also had an appointment made for a repeat.

An appointment came in for an appointment for an infusion of Intravenous Zolendronic Acid, dated 2 days before my denosumab appointment.   No explanation whatsoever, except a leaflet about that treatment.  I phoned up and queried this. I was told that a new department had taken over that clinic and that this appointment would replace my denosumab one..

I accepted that, reckoned that they knew what they were doing, but after reflection became concerned.

I knew nothing of this new treatment. No one had given me any explanation.  Was this treatment better, what were the side effects , was it just a change for me or was this a treatment which had just become available ? I phoned back and said that I wanted to talk to someone about the change.

This time I persisted in my request for information and eventually the person on the phone checked my notes.  I am now told that that the letter was a mistake. My appointment date had been changed but I would  not be having this infusion. I would be having my original denosumab.

Seemingly , because a new department had taken over there had been some confusion  and presumably I had received a wrong letter..

Throughout there has been a total lack of information.  I still have no paper record of any of these changes…..the cancellation of the original appointment or the confirmation that the letter about the infusion was wrong.   All my current information is from phone calls which I instigated.

Fortunately I am intelligent enough to want to understand what is going on and to pursue an issue if I am not happy. Not everyone can do this..

Poor show, NHS.
