"Dermatology Team Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children"

About: Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick children

(as a parent/guardian),

Excellent input and support from all the Dermatology team in Belfast RBHSC.

Family member was commenced on immunotherapy for severe eczema, which involves the use of injectable medication initially first doses in hospital and subsequently at home.

Due to a long-standing fear of needles a number of sessions were arranged with the play therapist which made so much difference to the experience and has helped in making the process much easier.

After these sessions it was possible to commence the planned treatment in the hospital setting, including parental administration of one dose with the guidance of staff. The fact that the play therapist could be present for this made such a difference to us both and it made a stressful situation so much better.

Staff were incredibly supportive understanding and knowledgeable with all aspects of the treatment explained. Most importantly we were able to be part of the decisions and discuss all aspects of the process.

Thank you to all of the dermatology team in particular the Consultant Dermatologist, Dermatology Specialist Nurse and Play Therapist who have been so supportive throughout this process and have made an incredible difference to our family.  A special thank you to Ciara (Play Therapist) for helping so much with reducing the level of distress related to needing to have injections and blood tests done. This has made an amazing difference to the whole process both in the present and for the future.
