I was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and was sent for a breast MRI. I was somewhat shocked to see the contraption which I had to lie in, face down. A platform on top of the table, at the end of which was a double mold to contain my breasts. The table is then fed into the scanner, feet first. I am not a small lady by any means, the result of which was that I didn't fit into the machine! I was utterly mortified! The radiographers were very sweet and said not to feel bad about it, it happens all the time!
My consultant assured me that they could proceed without the MRI. I then asked the question of what would happen if I had to have an MRI before the surgery. My consultant explained that in Britain the machine is made in 2 sizes - the smaller is at Monklands hospital, the larger at Hairmyres hospital (where I went), and failing that I would have to be sent to the vet hospital!
I felt utterly humiliated and degraded.
Being in a very emotional state already, I dissolved into tears and wanted the ground to open up and swallow me.
In this so called modern society, women are put into this appalling situation! Why? I am not the first person this has happened to and certainly not the last. I feel something needs to be done about it.
Being in a fragile state of mind following diagnosis and worrying about what is to follow, this situation only added to the stress. I don't think it's right!
I await your reply with interest.
