"Cancer and heart failure diagnosis and treatment"

About: General practices in Lanarkshire Golden Jubilee National Hospital / Adult Congenital Services Golden Jubilee National Hospital / Orthopaedics Golden Jubilee National Hospital / Thoracic Surgery University Hospital Hairmyres / Outpatients Department University Hospital Monklands / Radiology

(as a relative),

Coincidental diagnosis of cancer and heart failure after hip replacement. Very quick referrals for various scans , oscopies and consultants and inpatient care at Golden Jubilee Hospital.

Post op very quick referrals to oncology and cardiology. First class care as outpatient at Monklands, Hairmyres and inpatient care at Golden Jubilee Hospital. The joined up working was fabulous.

However main problem is primary care. It took 8 weeks and a prompt from us for an urgent orthopaedic referral to be made and failure to do immediate GP Comms request following hospital discharge, despite letter being hand delivered to surgery.

The staff in local health centre however were fantastic and fixed this omission for us. I think we need to bring GPs back into direct health board control. The quality of service delivery is so variable and we unfortunately are not having a good experience which is very stressful when dealing with acute medical issues.

Dear Vilamar,

Thank you for sharing your experience on Care Opinion.

I am so pleased to hear that such a frightening diagnosis was picked up so quickly at your hip replacement. Unfortunately I cannot speak on behalf of the Golden Jubilee, however I am pleased to hear that there was excellent consistency in your care between them and University Hospitals Monklands and Hairmyres for your outpatient appointments. I will ensure this feedback is passed on to the teams in outpatients at University Hospitals Monklands and Hairmyres.

I am so sorry, however that there was an 8 week delay with your GP. This must have been very frustrating for you and I am disappointed to hear about it. GP’s are independent contractors and are responsible for investigating and responding to any concerns a person may have about the service; they are not registered to respond directly to feedback through Care Opinion. Can I please invite you to contact the Practice Manager if you would like a direct response about the service or you can also contact Primary Care Patient Affairs, I have included their contact details.

I hope you are recovering well.

Kind Regards,

Jenni
