"A dream team"

About: North Down Community Services / Tissue Viability Services The Ulster Hospital / Ward 6C

(as a relative),

My Mum was a patient in 6C at the Ulster hospital. From the minute she arrived into A&E her doctor was lovely. He encouraged her to take a corridor bed as the only other option was a recliner seat and due to mum's condition this wouldn't have been an option. She took the corridor bed and was so thankful for it. My mum can't walk far so she had to be helped to the bathroom by sitting on a weighing chair or commode to get her to the bathroom at the end of ward. I felt that all wards should have a wheelchair available for this kind of situation.

But the staff in 6C could not have been better from the staff nurses, nursing care assistants to the domestics and kitchen staff. Mum was very fond of a few of the staff in particular especially two of the night staff ladies. They gave Mum extra help when needed and went above and beyond. Through mum's stay it was clear to see the level of stress and burn out that the staff are going through. They are doing a job that most people wouldn't want to ever do and yet sometimes it feels like they are forgotten, these people are human and could go work in other places with better conditions.

Mum witnessed one event where one member of staff was verbally rude to a patient regarding the changing of a pad, and refusing to help them further. This patient was very confused and disorientated and thankfully some of the other nurses often had this patient sit beside them to give them company and settle them. It appeared to my mum that the member of staff mentioned above had an attitude and lacked caring.

Mum also was seen by TVN who was the first person in a few years that we have met who has been realistic and helpful. Mum has been to a clinic about her condition and believes she was only been met with judgement when Mum said she wasn't capable of putting on compression stocking herself. This TVN couldn't believe that Mum would ever have been told to try it herself and that it never would have been possible for her.
We have been fighting for Mum's condition to be looked at and a plan be put in place for years. But finally thanks to the lovely team in 6C Mum has finally got the help and care she needed and deserved. So thank you 6C team for helping us to get mum to a better physical place and for the care, support and help you gave her. I believe you deserve a pay rise, more recognition and definitely more holidays.

Dear Very happy family

Thank you for sharing the story of your mum's experience.

It is great to know that your mum was so well looked after by our staff in Emergency Department and Ulster Ward 6C and by a Tissue Viability Nurse.

I have shared your positive feedback to these partners who greatly appreciate your kind words and to know that their contribution has supported your mum well.

I have raised your point regarding staff rudeness to ward leadership for exploration and responsive action. Thank you for alerting us to this - patient and family feedback is very important in helping us to know about and address issues.

I hope that your mum keeps well.

Best wishes

Conor
