I recently spent quite a bit of time in the ED department, at CAH with a family member with dementia. The nursing & auxillary staff we met were very kind and caring, showing great awareness of the potential for delirium and trying to minimise the risks. Special thanks to Patricia listening to our concerns about potential delirium & getting a bed sorted. The Red Area was great - quiet and dark at night which ensured a good sleep.
We also had a stay in the Yellow Area. Again, the staff were lovely. Unfortunately the room we were in had glass windows onto the link corridor with sensor lights, which meant the room lit up like daylight every time someone walked past (very frequently) so if we could make a suggestion, it would be to add blinds/paint blackout on the glass windows to prevent disturbance from the corridor light at night. (My family member was very disorientated when the light came on, resulting in minimal sleep / disorientation regarding time of day, or in this case, night).
Something so simple can make such a difference to those with dementia / at risk of delirium.
