I phoned the GP regarding my infant daughter, who had been unwell for days over a public holiday weekend. I phoned repeatedly on the Tuesday morning when the GP reopened but of course could not get through. I tried throughout the day whilst caring for my baby daughter and my 3 year old.
Eventually my call was answered by a very kind receptionist. I explained that my daughter had been unwell for 2-3 days with a very high temperature, diarrhoea, a rash and was just not herself. The receptionist was very understanding and said they would ask the on-call GP to phone me.
The doctor called me back, and when I answered the call their tone was irate and they asked me repeatedly why I had asked for an emergency call back. I did not in any way indicate that my daughter's symptoms were an emergency, but I appreciated the receptionist requesting a GP call back for me due to my daughter being so young and not having made much improvement with my care for her at home. I felt the doctor showed little interest in my daughter and was more concerned with establishing why I had asked for an emergency call back when I had not done so.
I found the doctor's tone to be extremely dismissive, patronising and unpleasant. I think they should not work with patients if they cannot speak to people with a tone of basic respect. This interaction took place 4 months ago and I still think of how poorly this call was handled by a professional GP. We should not have to jump though hoops or be made to feel bad on the rare occasion we have to contact a professional for some support and advice about a very young child. In any future dealings with my GP surgery I will ensure I request not to speak with this doctor again.
