"I felt listened to and supported"

About: Eglinton Medical Practice Roe Valley / Occupational Therapy

(as a service user),

My GP referred me to the MDT physio as I had a very painful shoulder. I obtained this appointment within two weeks. The first time I saw the MDT physio she examined me and gave me specific exercises to do. This was very helpful & reassuring. The second time I saw her she updated my exercise plan and referred me for a block of physio. I felt listened to and supported.

Within weeks I had an appointment with a hospital physio based locally named Naomi. She was really caring and wise and totally knew what she was talking about. She quickly discerned that I was very stressed and that this was contributing to my physical symptoms. She strongly advised me to access professional help for the ongoing stress in my life.

Within a week I had obtained an appointment with the MDT Mental Health Practitioner. She listened to me with kindness and empathy and referred me for counselling. I’m currently on the waiting list for counselling. However the wise words of this physio were a real wake up call for me. My chronic pain immediately began to reduce when I took on board what she said and began addressing my stress levels, as well as doing the prescribed exercises and stretches.

Many thanks AnCailinAlainn for your posting.

We really appreciate you taking the time to feedback on your experience in both MDT (Multi Disciplinary Team) First Contact Physiotherapy (FCP) within your GP service, and MSK (Musculo-skeletal) Physiotherapy.

Our MDT/FCP physiotherapist Fiona is highly regarded within our team as a very caring and clinically experienced practitioner and this story reflects her ability to add to the package of early intervention in Primary Care, and recognise the need for further support for your presenting condition by referring you on.

I have also spoken with my colleague in MSK Physiotherapy, who is also happy you had such a positive experience. Naomi is a very experienced practitioner, with particular abilities in combining manual therapy, exercise and self-management strategies, in optimising outcome for patients. We wish you continued recovery.

Kind regards,

Elizabeth Connolly-Anderson & Peter O'Conner
