I've been attending the Plaster Room (Clinic 3) now for the past few months now. This started as a small wound in my knee area which had been damaged after the first half of a knee revision (replacement of a replacement knee). My old knee has been removed but the new knee has not yet been put back in, because of the presence of this fingernail sized wound. I've gone from a series of Pico dressings which need to be cleaned and changed every week, to now being in a full leg plastercast with a small opening for access for weekly inspection and re-dressing.
The ward sister, Sandra (who insists her name is Santa during this festive time) and the three senior nurses Gemma, Melissa and Amanda, along with other members of caring staff have been so understanding and patient as they have attending to my needs.
Somehow, the very busy place seems to hum like clockwork thanks to the professional and skilful way that all the staff work. If I need to be educated as to how to care for my wound while away, they very calmly explain the full detail so that I am left in no doubt as to how to proceed. They never seem to get flustered or exasperated by what I ask or what is presented to them.
I always come away from the clinic with a good feeling of wellbeing and that good, if slow, progress is being maintained. I always feel like I'm in the fast lane of care and attention.
