My father was admitted to hospital with unknown illness which manifested in a deep cough that kept him from sleeping or eating for a sustained time leading to severe weight loss and deterioration.
We were waiting for a CT scan and told that, despite being booked in, the scan had been cancelled. My dad who was by this time very ill and frail, having lost over a stone of weight in a week, was deeply concerned.
However, a hospital porter named Rasheed (Ward 206 in Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh) phoned a nurse and also the CT department to explain our situation, as there were no nurses present in the ward (or to be found).
Rasheed was told there was no one to take my dad to the CT theatre, even though there might be a slim chance they could see him. Rasheed told them he would take my father down in a wheelchair, which he promptly did, and we were able to have the scan done which revealed my dad had pneumonia.
Rasheed, you went above and beyond and really seemed to care for my dad and our family. I could see that Rasheed did this with all the patients in the ward and was congenial and good natured to the staff and visitors alike. He is an example of a fine human being in a busy and difficult role, and no doubt often doing more for the hospital and people there than might be known.
Thank you Rasheed.
