(as the patient),

Having suffered severe nerve pain for many months I attended a specialist pain clinic where I saw a fantastic doctor who recommended patches along with another tablet.

When I went to GP (Whitevale Medical Centre Glasgow) to get prescription I was told I couldn't have the patches as I didn't have shingles. Whilst this product is only licensed for shingles, there are many studies to show that it is very effective for other nerve pain also.

Dear unhappy36,

I was very sorry to read that you had encountered these difficulties, could I suggest that your GP contacts the doctor you saw at the Pain Clinic to try to resolve this for you?

I hope that by discussing your ongoing care they might be able to resolve this impase for you.

Thank you for your response Paul. I did in fact see my GP today to discuss this and I understand that each GP has the right to refuse unlicensed medications if they choose but it still feels unhelpful.

He did say that he would contact my specialist and ask if he would prescribe the patches instead so I await developments on that front. Thanks.
