My wife has a long history of health issues and was first hospitalised in 1974. She is in her 80s and suffers from a poor memory and anxiety coupled with a physical frailty.
We were referred under the 2-week rule and promptly received an appointment at The Mermaid Centre at RCH Truro. We approached the first visit with a great deal of misgiving and apprehension but these worries evaporated within the first few minutes as the initial appointment unfolded. A good start was the spotless cleanliness of the consulting room. A diagnosis was made (not the best of news) and a plan was devised. We went home feeling very reassured and certainly with a load lifted from our minds. The written information and advice provided was helpful and far reaching.
We are now on the other side of successful surgery and can reflect on the part played by the Mermaid Centre in our journey. My experience in hospital visits goes back a long time, going as far afield as London to secure help for my wife's problems, and I find there is something exceptional about this unit. It generates a feeling of confidence that is invaluable.
Everyone is consistently helpful and efficient, with a remarkable ability to listen. I would suggest the cohesive nature that runs throughout is no accident and is brought about about by people who are inherently caring and kindly. It has certainly seen us through almost effortlessly a process which could well have been almost beyond us.
The Mermaid Centre has been the hub of our experience from which radiated our visits to other departments. Our experiences throughout were positive and I take the opportunity to list :-
The pre-assessment unit.
The Tresvannick MRI unit
St. Michael's Hayle
The Sunrise Centre (LA3).
AMU 1
Tintagel ward.
The ambulance crew.
Bodmin General.
Positive and concerted actions across the board have resulted in my wife recovering well at home and with a plan in place to further enhance her quality of life.
The motto ''One and all - we care'' would seem to be a pretty good one and well justified.
"Everyone is consistently helpful and efficient"
