I had an operation on both eyes in late 2023. The surgeon's instructions were that stitches should be removed in 7 days. Ward staff told me I would receive notification of a follow up appointment for the stitches to be removed. No appointment came through so I spent 2 days trying to get in touch with the hospital to find out what was going on.
In the end it was a receptionist on the general switchboard that helped me get a follow up appointment, but contrary to the surgeo'ns instructions the stitches weren't removed until 12 days after the operation. I was in considerable discomfort because the stitches had been left in too long. The doctor who eventually removed the stitches couldn't get some of them out because they were too tight, so he said they would have to be left in and my body would absorb them. I was told again in writing that there would be a follow up appointment in 2-3 months time but 4 months later I'm still waiting for a follow up appointment.
I feel it's such a shame that the hospital surgeon, ward staff, and patients are being let down by the people who deal with follow up appointments. I feel my care and recovery has been compromised because of these delays and I feel really quite angry about it. I'm left with granulomas and scar thickening because the stitches were left in too long and considerable problems with eye irritation, both of which I hoped to address at the follow up appointment, but it appears that no one is actually following up as promised.
