"Covid on the ward"

About: Royal Victoria Hospital / Care of the Elderly (Ward 5E)

(as a relative),

I have been visiting ward E5 and I have just found out that there is Covid on the ward.

I approached the Sister and they told me that it was at the opposite end of the ward, however later that evening I found out that it was in the room next door to where I had been visiting. The same nurses were going in and out of the room with the patient who had Covid, and then coming to see my relative.

There was no notification to any of the visitors coming on to the ward that there was Covid, I had to approach the staff before they put a notice up.

It is worrying as I have just had a triple heart bypass.

Dear marjd76,

My name is Rebecca Smyth. I am the Ward Sister for 5E in the Royal Victoria Hospital. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience on Care Opinion.

I firstly wish to apologise for the worry this has caused you.

Unfortunately the ward experienced a Covid outbreak last week. This was an ever changing situation as staff ensured that the appropriate patients on the ward were tested. Infection control procedures were followed in ensuring that patients were appropriately placed to isolate. This meant that all side rooms had to be used to ensure patients could isolate to prevent the spread. Staff would have endeavoured to ensure that potential visitors were informed prior to visiting time however this would have taken some time.

If you would like to discuss any aspect of care with me, please contact me at rebeccax.smyth@belfasttrust.hscni.net
