"Hand Hygiene Awareness. Poor Communication."

About: Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Gastroenterology

(as the patient),

Hello

I recently attended the Glasgow Royal Infirmary Gastro Day Unit to have some bloods taken.

Now I know how busy staff are, but I witnessed very poor hand hygiene and lack of PPE. Another patient was getting a cannula inserted (without gloves on) and then straight away without washing their hands they then came directly over to myself and took bloods, again with no gloves or apron on.

I feel this is an important part of infection control and I wish to highlight this, so that this is improved.

Patient identification also needs work. Nobody asked me my date of birth and name. Assuming that they have the right patient is wrong.

Thank you

Dear MT09

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. It is disappointing to hear about your experience and I would like to reassure you that NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde take Hand Hygiene and infection control measures very seriously. This has been shared with the Senior staff and staff have been reminded of their infection prevention and control training and the importance of confirming patient’s details. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Take Care

Nicole

Update posted by MT09 (the patient)

Hi Nicole

I am disappointed with this response. It would be helpful to know who had been informed and for them to have reached out to me. This has now prompted a formal complaint to be submitted.

Thank you
