"I couldn't thank them enough for their help, kindness and professionalism"

About: South Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust / Emergency ambulance

(as the patient),

I am a new amputee in my right leg and recently had a fall getting out of bed. I cannot get up as I have metal kneecaps, so bottom walked to the living room to get to the phone to call 999.

I told the person on the end of the phone and he took some details and said it might be some time before help arrived. Two paramedics arrived in about 1.20hrs, although one said she was a physio. They were very good and put me at my ease and took some ops to make sure I had not hurt myself. They were really kind, but professional. I have a strange sense of humour as this helps me in this kind of situation and they laughed with me and really helped me feel at ease.

Once they had checked me over and made sure I had not injured myself they told me what they were going to do. They had brought a special chair and explained how it worked and that they would build it around me. Before that they asked me how I had ended up having an amputation - I explained I had been due to go into hospital for a 3rd operation on my ankle, but was taken ill the afternoon before and had to ring 111 and a doctor said she was sending paramedics. They came quite quickly and took me to A&E and it turned out I had sepsis due to an infection in the metalwork in my foot.

One of them gave me an information leaflet on Sepsis which was very helpful. They then began to build this chair around me which was really strange as it kept beeping. When it was built they told me they were going to stand me up so that I could transfer into my wheelchair. I was so relieved to be off the floor.

I couldn't thank them enough for their help, kindness and professionalism. I said I wished there was some way I could really thank them and they told me about this website and gave me a leaflet. I would like to commend these two women for their help, courtesy, professionalism, kindness and for making me laugh in a very difficult situation.
